How does a pole shift into galactic alignment? There are two types of pole shifts. The first type is a magnetic pole shift, and the other, a physical pole shift.
A magnetic pole shift is the reversal of our magentic poles. The northern magnetic pole becomes the southern magnetic pole, and southern the northern. This is actually a well documental phenomena. There historical evidence of this event having already occured on Earth many times. It even suggested that Earth is long overdue for a magnetic pole reversal. Magnetic pole shifts from the past show no evidence of mass destruction. For the brief period the magnetic poles do undergo reversal, there may be an increase in the amount of cosmic radiation the reaches the Earth's surface. But the increase is not significant enough to cause any widespread harm.
Humans who do witness this event will be very lucky. Auroras will be seen all over the world due to small localized poles forming during the reversal process. Places like New York City, Tokyo, London, all may have their own localized auroras form. For a brief period of time, auroras will be visible from almost anywhere on our planet.
The other type of pole shift is an actual physical pole shift. These show evidence of having occured in the past like magnetic pole shifts, but on a much, much smaller scale. A pole shift on a scale that would cause catastrophic events would require and enormous amount of energy, which could only be provided by a large impacting body, such a large asteroid. A physical pole shift would surely mean doom for all, but a physical pole shift is no more likely to happen on December 21st, 2012, then as opposed to today.
