Galactic Alignments 2012 - Article

The prophecies galactic alignment of 2012 have some major flaws. While various sources claim either the Sun is moving toward or away from the galactic plane, regardless of the direction we are moving in, we are too far away from the galactic plane to actually cross it on December 21st, 2012. Stated on the second page of the article, we are a few million years away from doing this if we are moving toward the galactic plane. Space debris would the likely cause for destruction while passing through this dense region of the galaxy. You can even make the case that we are passing through the galactic plane right now (which would have began millions years ago). The chance of an asteroid striking the Earth on 12/21/2012 is no different than today. The probability of such an impact which will be the same in 2020, 2050, and etc. While occasionally we do move through extra dense regions of space increasing the chances of impact slightly, there is no modern day evidence suggesting that we will pass through such a region in 2012.

The other galactic alignment where the Earth, Sun, and supermassive black hole at the center of Milky Way line up seems like just a very rare and periodic occurrence that the Mayans based their calendar around.
